A new satellite TV installation at the Atherton Gardens Public Housing Estate in Melbourne means many migrant residents can now enjoy television in their mother tongue.
 
The estate is home to more than 2000 people from more than 20 countries. “Nearly one-third of residents in these four high rise buildings are aged immigrants who, owing to language difficulties, don’t understand local television,” said resident Susan Zhou.

If you go to Collingwood Neighbourhood House on Wednesday afternoons for lunch, you will meet Sofia Daws, a volunteer cook who resides in the Collingwood housing estate; she will greet you with a big smile.

She has been doing volunteer work for 6 months at Collingwood Neighbourhood House and the Neighbourhood Justice Centre every fortnight.

Aspiring artist Cathy Fei may be just six-years-old, but she has her sights set on winning this year’s Tianjin International Children’s Painting Competition in China.

Cathy, a student at Glen Waverley Primary School, was third in her class at the 2006 festival, which is held in the Chinese city every two years. Because of the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the event was postponed until July 25-31 this year.

Sudanese youths have moved to counter racist attacks by holding a national Sudanese basketball tournament.

The competition involving young members of Australia’s Sudanese community was held in the Melbourne suburb of Keysborough just before Christmas. The contest, which was watched by over 1,000 spectators, attracted 12 male and two female teams from around Australia. It is now planned as an annual event.
